Who am I?

David Poblador i GarciaMy name is David Poblador, I was born in Barcelona, Catalunya in 1980, and I tweet often :) (@davidpoblador)

I’ve been jazzing around the Internet since 1997, and I’ve been involved in several projects somehow connected with Free Software.

In 2002 I founded PuntBarra, a Catalan Slashdot-like site. Thanks to it I got involved in some Free Software projects and groups, and got to know some people who strongly influenced my vision on software development and free software business model.

I started managing my first GNU/Linux box in 1998, and since then, Systems Administration has been my hobby and it was my main work duty for over 8 years.

In 2001, after two years working as a network and systems operator, I started up my company with Albert Horta, Rinho, where we deployed GNU/Linux based servers and built web apps for SMEs. We worked for several medium sized companies in Catalunya, and we even had the chance of providing a nation wide free software deployment training to local government employees.

In 2006, I was given the chance to start the Systems Administration department in Intercom World Wide, the international wing of Grupo Intercom, a leading Internet company in Spain, where I had the opportunity to play and learn with trendy technologies such as Virtualization, Information Retrieval software, high availability, load balancing and horizontal scaling. Being there I discovered another hobby: SEO. I’ve been always a passionate fan of search algorithms, and while trying to understand how search engines work I was given the chance of pushing changes to our websites in order to improve usability, reliability and ranking.

In 2009 I joined Flumotion as the Infrastructure Manager. Flumotion, a company founded in 2006, is a leader in streaming technologies in the south of Europe. Flumotion develops a free software streaming media server.

In June 2010 I started working at FloraQueen, a leader in online flower delivery, as the CTO. I helped building a new infrastructure that allowed FloraQueen to face the future challenges regarding scalability, virtualization and load balancing, just to name a few.

Mathematics and linguistics are also among my hobbies. In 2008, I was one of the winners of Google Treasure Hunt, a Google contest with more 100,000 participants where I had the chance to play with prime numbers. I’m also a big fan of languages (natural languages, not programming languages) grammars.
